Hookah Flavors: a quick guide

50 g, 100 g or 250 g? A typical bowl takes 10–15 g, so a 50 g pack is three or four bowls: the right size to try a new flavor. Once you have a favorite, a 250 g tin (Al Fakher) costs less per bowl. 100 g to 200 g packs (Fumari, Blackburn, Darkside, Starline) sit in between.

Blonde leaf or dark leaf? Most shisha, including Al Fakher, Adalya, Serbetli and Fumari, is made with blonde leaf: lighter, smooth and forgiving with heat. Darkside and Blackburn use dark leaf, which is noticeably stronger and more concentrated: pack it lighter and keep the heat lower. Musthave sits in between. If you're new to hookah, start with blonde leaf.

Picking a brand. Al Fakher is the classic: clean, familiar flavors and easy to pack. Adalya is sweet, juicy and bold. Darkside is for regular smokers who find blonde leaf too light.

Keeping it fresh. Once it's open, squeeze the air out of the bag or close the tin tight and keep it away from heat and sunlight. Shisha that dries out loses flavor and burns harsh.
